Romance in the Hoodoos | New Mexico



There's times when your wedding day is just so full that the idea of heading out for golden hour romantic pictures. If you are feeling like you want tips of my ultimate timeline from a photographers perspective, you can find my free downloadable timeline here.


One of the most helpful recommendations I like to make for my brides is to do a romantic session, in all your wedding finery, on a different day at an epic location. Consider it a souped up first look. You get to see each other in a private, intimate location without everyone watching. You get to open up your timeline and spend more time with your friends and family. You get to also add some variety to your wedding gallery.


New Mexico is filled with gorgeous rock formations and scenic views. I have fully decided that it is one of the most underrated states in the United States and is such an incredible place to have a destination wedding. Not only are most venues less expensive than other locations, but there are also 310 days of sunshine every year so you're a lot less likely to get rain on your wedding day. I know they say that is lucky but it doesn't feel lucky when you're having to move your planned outside ceremony indoors.

Is there anything more classic than red details at a wedding? As a wedding photographer, I find that most other photographers really try to stay away from reds. We don't recommend them in our wardrobe guides and we don't share many images with reds so I'm here to give red back its spot at the top of wedding palettes to consider for your wedding day.


So what did Lily & Iris do with these florals that completely changed the red wedding game for me? It's the mixture of the different shades that really added a dimension to all the details. The insane florals mixed with this gorgeous indoor ceremony location at Wadley Farms made the most perfect combination for completely killer wedding photos. I've said it many times and I'll say it again, but if you are looking for the most flattering venues for your wedding, look for lots of good natural light (lots and lots of windows) and look for light, neutral colored walls.


Heather Benge did the most incredible job of piecing all of these beautiful details together in a way that truly showcases the couples individual tastes and preferences in a timeless and classic yet modern way. There is nothing better as a wedding photographer than coming to a wedding that has been curated by a super talented wedding planner. I'm going to go ahead and admit that the wedding planner is more important than the photographer (but just by a bit)

Choosing the Perfect Timeline For Your Wedding

Some might say that the most important decision to make is where you're going to get married, who your vendors are, etc. and those are all super important decisions but there is one decision that trumps it all.



Yep! You're thinking I'm crazy huh? don't give up on me yet. Stay with me here a little bit longer why I explain why.


All those other things that I mentioned most people would think are the most important...it's because they are SO SUPER IMPORTANT but without a correct timeline, those elements won't be showcased in their best way.


So since I LOVE a well written timeline, I've gone ahead and written you up a sample one.


Now since sunsets vary wherever you might live, this timeline is written all based on how many hours before sunset or after sunset. Just plug in your sunset time, do some simple math and voila!

This sample timeline includes a first look. If you or your clients choose not to do a first look, I would bring the ceremony an hour earlier and do family pictures and wedding party pictures after the ceremony.


This timeline is created with the opportunity to get the best possible light and time to fully photograph the elements of a wedding that are usually the most memorable for the client.
